What Happened?

Muslim Women started a movement using their voices to ignite change. Instead of mass demonstrations, women are speaking up for greater recognition that they too, can be knowledgeable authorities on Islamic values. (Source: TIME)

KUPI organizers say that the movement has put Indonesia at the forefront of the efforts to produce women-friendly interpretations of Islam. (Source: TIME)

“We thought why not come together so we can give more voices to the women ulama that have been working on women’s rights issues so that we can be heard in the public and shift the public in a more moderate direction on religion.”

Human Rights Activist & Indonesia Director of the Asian Muslim Action Network
